Beer Reviews News TapHunter.com Updates — 03 December 2010

We proudly present the official TapHunter 2nd place winner of the San Diego Favorite Brewery Awards. Honoring the best.

2nd Place – Hess Brewing Company

All San Diego County Breweries and Brew Pubs competed in the voting process between October 25th – November24th by posting out to their fans via email, social media and San Diego Beer Week events.

Michael Hess was a home brewer for nearly 15 years before deciding to go legit with his hobby. Hess Brewing has the distinction of being one of San Diego’s first licensed nanobreweries and opened it’s tasting room in July 2010. Nano, as in small, hand-crafted batches.

Michael started Hess out of passion for great beer and as a way to test the legitimacy of a nano. “I wanted to see if it could actually work and be sustained,” he told us as his reason for starting Hess as a nano. Let’s not get hung up on size. Let’s focus on their celebration party and beer being served.

Michael’s comment on winning 2nd place, “Being one of the newer breweries in San Diego, we’re honored and thrilled to see the amazing San Diego craft beer fans and all of their support for Hess.”

Awesome. Wish they had been number one but still, for a brewery so new this is great, and well deserved. Delicious beers.Let’s see some more black IPA!

Hmmmm….Guess this was a popularity contest. Lots of responses from Hess supporters. I haven’t had all their beers yet, but 2nd best brewery in SD is quite a stretch for this start up company. There are some tried and true artisans who are suspiciously absent..Pizza Port, Alpine, Green Flash, Coronado, just to name a few. Congratulations to Hess, but this is a little fishy.

The SD Brewery Awards were an attempt to get the opinion of our users and the general public as well as to encourage each brewery & brew pub to use social media to its fullest potential. I can assure you nothing fishy went on for this contest. We love all the San Diego area breweries & brew pubs and wanted the public to have a chance to voice their opinion on their favorite.

We contacted every brewery & brew pub listed in the contest and encouraged them to push the contest out through their blogs, websites, facebooks etc. Some breweries chose to publicize the contest, others didn’t. Hess did a great job pushing the contest out to their fans through their blog.

This was only year 1 of the SD Brewery Awards and we hope that it will grow more and more every year. Hopefully other breweries will look to the Hess example and see the power of social media, even for a nanobrewery. We are already looking forward to next year’s contest.

Thanks you for your reply Kyle. Your response begs the the reader to then question the quality/accuracy of your content. Is Hess TRULY the second favorite brewery in San Diego? I applaud your effort to use new media, but that still does not excuse the spread of misleading information. If, as you say, you wanted to encourage SD breweries to use social media, you should have then named your contest “The SD Brewery Awards For Best Use Of Social Media”

Once again, cheers to Hess. Not trying to steal their thunder in any way. The couple beers I have tried from them have been top notch and I look forward to drinking more. But, SD’s 2nd favorite brewery (as of today) they are not. The numbers do not lie.

    Cheers
